Artist Statment

I am an artist looking to bring awareness to the significance of moments. Moments are something we can never escape, yet sometimes we find ourselves grasping for them. Photography is one of the only tools which humans can use to truly seize a moment, as moments are split seconds in time and space which change just as fast as they present themselves. Each second, moments change and adapt. Moments are never the same from one second to the next, just as no two pictures can ever be the same after the click of a shutter. Although no two moments are the same and can be drastically different in nature, using different methods and styles of photography, I hope to shine light upon the beauty of simplicity which can be found in the moments of different people and places.

I use film and digital photography, both in physical prints, in combination with my editing skills of digital design through photoshop and other adobe programs to highlight the beauty of simplicity in each moment and photo. Film allows me to have hands-on experience with the photo and the environment I am trying to create or depict, while digital prints allow me space for my creative imagination to flow in editing and emphasize what I believe makes a moment beautiful.

Photography is important to me because it allows me to capture the soul and essence of a single moment. Photos can reveal so much about a person, a place, or a situation. Photos are a door into a world that is sometimes like or unlike our own; it allows us to live vicariously through the moments of others, which are not directly captured by our own eyes in real time. My inspiration is my own personal experience with the simplest moments in my life. Often these moments can be the easiest to forget, but as I reflect on my college life, I find these “in between” moments are the ones I treasure most. My own journey has created a desire in me to invite others to take a peek into my lens and my perspective of the moments behind my photographs. I want viewers to experience moments of other people or unknown places from a new lens.

The intent behind my artwork is to capture the essence of a particular place or person and make the moment it represents tangible in the form of a photograph. In my discoveries, I realized that moments are complex and intangible, that is why I push to capture them and remind everyone of the importance of capturing and cherishing moments in their own lives. Moments are illusive and photography is my way of wrangling and documenting them, which is important especially when those moments inspire us or are ones that we so desperately wish would last a lifetime.

Each place and moment can mean various things to all different people. The only thing we know for sure is what they mean to us. This is why I share my moments, to offer a lens into my life, yet leave space for the viewer to interpret each moment for themselves.
